This is the first post for Hobby Time. Once every two weeks I will be posting about a hobby or craft from one of our members, or friends of SOH, or just one I find interesting. If you have a hobby or craft you want to share please email me with a description and some pictures. My email address is darksidesm@yahoo.com. Please put “Hobby Time” in the subject and your website logon name so I know who you are.
Thanks
This hobby time you will see an Old Singer Sewing Machine that RIG^SOH^’s wife, CGreen1^SOH^ (Miss Carol) took from pieces and refinished it into a beautiful brand new sewing machine. Enjoy!!!

Per Miss Green, this is her "Process of Refinishing":
1. Take entire sewing machine apart so that all areas can be stripped, sanded, etc.
2. Strip each piece, using lacquer thinner as solvent. NEVER use water! Let dry 24 hrs.
3. I had to remove the damaged veneer on the top and inside the top section. Since it was oak, I replaced it with the thickest veneer I could order so that it would look like the original veneer. I had to stain the new veneer differently since it was much lighter (newer in age) than the other parts of the cabinet. (I put a solid piece of veneer on the top and inside the top in the middle where the machine is located and had to “cut” around the edges so I could remove veneer where the machine came up.
4. Sand with 120 and then 220 sandpaper.
5. Stain each piece using brush and wiping with paper towel to remove excess.
6. Let dry 24 hrs and then seal with either shellac or vinyl or plain lacquer sealer, depending upon the type of finish you use.
7. Sand with 400 “no fil” sandpaper and/or #0000 steel wool to smooth sealer.
8. Spray 3 coats of finish. I use pre-catalyzed lacquer as it is harder than the regular lacquer. I finish with a semi-gloss so that it is not too shiny, more like a hand-rubbed finish. I sand between each coat with the “no fil” sandpaper and blow off excess to remove any dust or foreign objects. Insects love this stuff!!
9. After finishing, I rebuild the entire cabinet, cleaning and polishing hardware before reattaching. I repainted the bottom part (legs, pedal, etc.) before putting the cabinet section on the top. Machine was polished and rusty pieces were removed, polished, and replaced.
VIOLA!
